We thought the contractor did an amazing job. We had already done a lot of sealing and insulating over the last five years of owning this house, so whatever was left to do was left because it was complicated or highly unpleasant. They did it all and did it well. I was really grateful that we were assigned a contractor that was so experienced and creative, since someone who just had basic training wouldn’t have been able to figure out how to handle this house. We have already recommended them to friends and neighbors.
After attending the workshop on Retrofit Baltimore, I immediately signed up. And I am so glad I did! My home feels so much more comfortable. I am no longer “heating” the outdoors. Whatever heat is in the home stays in the home! The workers were fast and efficient, knew what they were doing, and taught me so much about a place I lived in for 11 years. I feel like I have a new place now and I’m forever grateful that I used this program.
Our house was built in approximately 1870 and we have lived in it for the past 7 years. Our biggest challenge was the 3rd floor, which was very drafty in winter and hot in the summer. The assessment was very easy and very interesting. Wow were we surprised at just how leaky our house was. We found out that a fireplace we thought was non-functional was open and air was just pouring through it. We also found out that our third floor was a sieve. It was a very good use of $100. Our Retrofit Baltimore Energy Advocate was very helpful and acted as a liaison with the contractor which made it much more convenient. I have recommended to several friends and neighbors that they have the assessment done through Retrofit Baltimore.
Our house was built in 1922 and during our first winter here, we noticed that it was extremely drafty. The heating bills were very expensive and it seemed like all of our income was going into keeping the house warm. Since we live in an older house that occasionally needs repairs, we have a lot of experience working with different contractors, but we were hesitant to pick a home energy performance contractor on our own. When someone from Retrofit Baltimore knocked on our door to invite us to an energy meeting, we were intrigued by the program and went to learn more. The presentation was very informative and made it easy to understand the basics of a home energy retrofit.
The energy assessment was the most interesting part of the process. We learned that our house has a balloon frame, which is one of the most inefficient frames possible. The balloon frame allowed air to come in uninhibited and made the insulation ineffective. It was amazing to see the blower door test in action, and see how much air was flowing through the basement. The building analyst taught us how air moves in and out of the house, and explained why some of our rooms were cold during the winter. It was frustrating to hear how much energy we were wasting, but good to know that the building analysts referred by Retrofit Baltimore could help us save more energy. We are extremely happy with the work done by the contractor. They air sealed and redid all the insulation in the attic as well as installing exhaust fans. We have already noticed the basement is not as cold as before, and are looking forward to a warmer house this winter. The customer service throughout this process has been amazing!
Retrofit Baltimore basically fell into my lap when they gave a presentation at my church. I had been considering energy retrofit work on my home but didn’t decide to move forward until I heard Retrofit Baltimore’s presentation. During the winter, my 119 year old house was freezing on the first floor but comfortable on the second floor. I decided to get the head-to-toe retrofit treatment and had all of the recommendations from the audit report implemented. I knew it would pay off in the long run and the 50% rebates really sealed the deal! The contractor Retrofit Baltimore connected me with was very courteous, clean, and always on time. The financing for my project was very easy and they completed all the paperwork for me. Since the retrofit work was completed, I have felt a noticeable difference in my home. The temperature has been stabilized on both floors, the furnace doesn’t kick on as often, and the first energy bill I received after the retrofit was cheaper! –
After experiencing outrageous heating costs during our first winter in our home, we knew we had to do something to save money and reduce our carbon footprint. I heard about Retrofit Baltimore through a friend and decided to attend an energy meeting. The energy assessment confirmed my suspicions that the energy loss in our home was a result of draftiness and lack of insulation. We also appreciated that the building analyst checked for gas leaks and it was great to receive some free CFL light bulbs! Since the retrofit work has been completed, we have already noticed a difference in our home. The draft down the hallway to the kitchen is gone and we no longer have to leave the heat running.
Our hundred year old Roland Park house seemed to be as drafty and inefficient in 2010 as I imagine it was in 1910. The contractor brought our home up to date in this regard quickly, courteously and neatly. The increased efficiency has not only lowered our bills, but has also made our third floor habitable on hot summer nights. Please know that I’ll be recommending Retrofit Baltimore to friends and colleagues in our neighborhood and beyond.
We were very pleased with the Retrofit Baltimore program. After an informative session, they referred us to an experienced contractor who quickly found numerous insulation issues and proposed some innovative solutions for our large and complicated home. After several days of hard work, our 100+ year old home is no longer drafty and our 3rd floor is no longer freezing in the winter. That makes for a much more comfortable home. The contractors were experienced and very pleasant to work with, and our contact at Retrofit Baltimore was there to help if we needed her. Best of all: this long-standing project is done thanks to the hand-holding from the Retrofit Baltimore team, most particularly pointing us to a trusted contractor. Highly recommended!
